EV Charger Installation in Vancouver: Cost, Permits, and Rebates

A Level 2 home charger is the difference between waking up full every morning and living at public stations. Here is what a proper install in Metro Vancouver looks like.

Level 1 vs Level 2 - and why Level 2 wins in Vancouver

Every EV ships with a Level 1 cord that plugs into a regular 120V outlet. It adds about 6 to 8 km of range per hour. If you drive more than 40 km a day - which describes most commutes from Coquitlam, Langley, or Richmond into Vancouver - that will not keep up. A Level 2 charger runs on a dedicated 240V circuit and adds 40 to 60 km of range per hour, so any overnight top-up is enough.

The install is not complicated when it is done right. It is a dedicated circuit from your panel, sized to the charger, protected at the correct breaker, and terminated at a hardwired unit or a NEMA 14-50 receptacle depending on the model.

Permits, inspections, and BC Hydro rebates

Every Level 2 install in British Columbia requires an electrical permit and a Technical Safety BC inspection. Skipping the permit voids your home insurance if there is ever a claim tied to the circuit, and it flags on future home sales.

The BC Hydro EV Charger Rebate and CleanBC Go Electric top-ups regularly cover several hundred dollars off qualifying Level 2 chargers and installation labour. The rebate is only paid on permitted, inspected installs completed by a licensed contractor - which is another reason to skip the handyman route.

The right way to size the circuit

Most home chargers are wired at 40 amps on a 50 amp breaker (32 amp continuous output) or 48 amps on a 60 amp breaker (40 amp continuous). Larger units and Tesla Wall Connectors can run higher, but the panel has to support it.

A load calculation on your existing service - especially on older 100 amp panels in East Vancouver, Burnaby Heights, and North Vancouver - decides whether you can add the charger as-is, throttle it with load management, or upgrade the panel first. Getting that right avoids nuisance trips and undersized wiring.
