What makes a job a true one-day project
A one-day project has four things going for it: the scope is known before the crew arrives, the materials are on the van or picked up on the way, the work does not depend on another trade finishing first, and the permit and inspection path is already understood. When those four line up, a two-person crew can start at 8 am and be done by mid-afternoon.
What kills a one-day job is discovery. Opening a wall and finding knob and tube, arriving to find the hot tub is not yet on site, or discovering the panel location needs a BC Hydro service relocation turns a single visit into a sequence of visits. The residential jobs that reliably finish in one day
Service upgrades and panel swaps are the most common. Moving a home from 60A or 100A to a modern 200A service, or swapping an obsolete or recalled panel for a new load centre with proper AFCI and GFCI protection, is a well-rehearsed one-day scope when the service location stays the same and BC Hydro coordination is arranged in advance.
Pot light packages are the next most common. A main floor or open-plan living area getting a full recessed LED layout, dimmers, and switching is a full but very achievable day for a two-person crew, and it lands squarely in the typical range for this kind of project.
New hot tub circuits are almost always a single visit: a dedicated GFCI-protected feeder, a proper disconnect within sight of the tub, correct bonding, and a trench or surface run to the pad. Small renovation electrical, a detached garage or workshop subpanel, an EV charger with a straightforward run, and a kitchen or laundry circuit rebuild all fit the same pattern.
The commercial jobs that finish in one day
Commercial equipment hookups are the quiet workhorse of the one-day category. A business takes delivery of a new machine, a photocopier, a commercial appliance, a compressor, or a piece of shop equipment, and it needs a correctly sized circuit, disconnect, and receptacle before it can be commissioned. We size the feeder from the nameplate, confirm available capacity at the panel, and land the connection the same day so the equipment is not sitting idle on your floor.
Tenant improvement punch work, a new dedicated circuit for a point-of-sale or server rack, an exterior receptacle or lighting circuit, and small three-phase connections in shops and warehouses all belong here too.
For businesses, the value of the single-visit model is not just cost. It is that the disruption is bounded. You know which day the work is happening, and you know it will be finished at the end of it.
What one-day projects typically cost
Most of the work described above lands in the $1,800 to $4,000 range including materials, which reflects a licensed crew, permitted work, quality devices, and Technical Safety BC inspection. A straightforward panel swap sits at the lower end. A full pot light package with dimming, a service upgrade with a mast and grounding rebuild, or a hot tub feeder with a long trench sits higher.
That price is quoted as a fixed number before the work starts, not discovered on the invoice. If we find something during the day that changes the scope, we stop, show you, and price the change before continuing.

How to prepare so your job stays a one-day job
Send photos of your existing panel, the meter base, and the area where the work is going. Confirm that any equipment, fixture, or hot tub being connected is on site and unpacked.
